Modesty Blaise: Coolest agent ever! I believe it is only fitting to have this week's Woman Wednesday devoted to Modesty Blaise since her creator, Peter O'Donnell passed away on May 3, I fell in love with a feisty, ass-kicking, intelligent, sexy, honourable, fearless woman when I was Her name is Modesty.
Some call her Mam'selle. Monica Vitti as Modesty Blaise. O'Donnell, was the name of the film and perhaps one inconsequential line spoken.
The movie was not horrid, per se. It just was bad and that had horrid consequences for the future as studios would look at the results and shy away from any suggestion of another attempt.
This was a shame for the world survived the Bond satire Casino Royale around the same time frame and it survived the Bond camp that was much of On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
But it never got the chance to survive the non-Modesty Blaise that the film delivered. It would be almost forty years later that anyone would try again.
This one was a lot better, which is not saying much. It was interesting and it was meant to be a prequel for the "real" Modesty Blaise adventures to come.
They just never came. Maybe some day they will. It did not do well. It did not get another chance. As can be seen in this list, all but one of the comicbooks released concerning Modesty Blaise are reprints of the original comic strips, collated into cohesive groupings.
I have listed them in the order that they originally came out although I have kept all the groups together, thus one group might start before another one ended but I have not separated them.
Of note are the two runs by Titan. Then the project went into hiatus before being resurrected and restarted in This second stab resulted in the full run of strips making into graphic novel format, almost always with 3 arcs per issue.
DC Comics also had a one-shot issue with the retelling of the story from the first novel. Comics Revue, the magazine which specialized in reprinting comic strips had two sets of works dealing with Modesty.
In its monthly issue, it would have numerous pages of strips about Blaise, stretching a story arc over several issues. I have not bothered to list them as they are so many.
Wikipedia has a good listing of them. In short, the reprints started with issued 26 and ran almost without break for several hundred issues. Comics Revue did have a short series of Comics Revue Presents Modesty Blaise in which it released 25 issues each containing one complete story arc.
Actually there were 24 of them but for some reason when it came time to end the run, they chose to have the last one be the same as the 1st one.
These I did list as a group. While there are several spy series that got their start as movies and even more than began as television shows, this wonderful set of adventures had its origins as a comic strip, making it quite unique.
Peter O'Donnell had been a successful writer for two different comic strips for British newspapers when he was given the chance to create an adventure story.
Wanting to create an enjoyable but believable storyline based on a woman as the heroine, he spent a year developing the characters and the style he would use.
He used as the genesis of her backstory a young refugee girl he had met just briefly during his time in the Service during WWII, coming up with his own story for who she was, how she got there, and where she would go from that point.
She would continue to enthrall readers for 38 years until the strip finally ended on the 11th of April, During that incredible run, Modesty would see more than 10, different strips made to tell over 90 separate adventures.
O'Donnell was the writer of each of the strips. He chose as his artist Jim Holdaway, a man he had worked with before and one he greatly respected.
Holdaway would remain 7 years until his death in His replacement was a Spanish artist named Enrique Romero. For the next 8 years, Romero grew the panels until he decided to try his own project.
The next few years saw three different artists hold the pen, John Burns, Patrick Wright, and Neville Colvin who did the most. In , Romero returned to the post and stayed until the strip ended 15 years later.
Even the U. Nothing could distract a man intent on harm better than a pair of shapely female breasts suddenly flashed before his eyes.
Prudish American publishers were nervous. As explained in the excellent article on Modesty Blaise on Wikipedia, the strips about Modesty Blaise number over 10, There were a small number of arcs that fell outside this system, such as In The Beginning , an arc which ran between the 8th and 9th arcs and told the original of Blaise.
In my listing below, I numbered it '0' because if you can read it first, it is a good idea. The Modesty Blaise fandom owes a huge debt of gratitude to Titan Books which has put into easy-to-read large paperback volumes the Blaise stories at an affordable price.
In addition to the strips which are worth the price alone, the books contain terrrific articles, some by the author before his death. Modesty Blaise is the greatest.
You can fill in the noun in many different ways: fighter, lover, friend, adventurer, tactician, whatever. Her adventures are absolute blasts to read.
The stories are fast paced. The characters, though often caricatures, are well crafted and fairly jump off the pages.
Throw in supporting characters like Sir Gerald and the Colliers, add lesser used people like Fraser and Weng, and touch it off with repeating friends like John Dall and Danny Chavasse.
It all brings the sense of having spent a lot of time with Modesty and Willie. I fully realize that the stories haven't the literary excellence of a John LeCarre novel or the sinister back alley feel of a Len Deighton.
The books are even lighter fare than given by Ian Fleming. The reason is simple. Since the purpose of any spy series is, to me at least, to entertain, no one does it better than Modesty Blaise.
In every book there will be places where you purse your lips wondering how she will escape some trap, or inhale sharply when a baddy unleashes some new danger, or, best of all, nod your head with a smile on your face when she pulls off another amazing caper.
And though I started as a Modesty fan by reading the books, the comic strips from where she sprang are even better. While other series may have you believing that they did or could happen, Modesty Blaise will have you wanting them to be so.
I have just discovered your fabulous site - what a gem! Regarding MB, she is simply the best and the love of my life.
The only point I would disagree with in your summation is regarding PD's literary skills. In my opinion, O'Donnell is one of the most underrated writers in any genre.
He was fabulous and vastly superior to Fleming and certainly the equal of Le Carre and Deighton. What fun, I love them!
Tell us what you think of the series. Give your grade and comments. Hello, Guest Sign In Register. It is the first run in with Gabriel, the head of another criminal organization.
The best choices in the opinion of the conspirators are Modesty and Willie and to get their cooperation, the leaders find and kidnap a young orphan girl named Lucille who is a ward of Willie Garvin.
The criminal genius named Seff saw in him an uncanny psychic ability to predict a person's probability of death. Armed with this information, he came up with a bizarre extortion scheme.
When Lucifer's abilities seemed to be slipping, it became imperative to find out why and that meant forcing the help of a Professor Collier, who happened to be a new friend of Modesty Blaise.
The surviving lady, Dinah Pilgrim, was an unwilling but important factor in a plan by the evil Gabriel and his even more despicable associate, Delicata.
The latter was an old acquaintance of Garvin and easily the cruelest man Willie had ever faced. Now the two men were involved in a scheme to uncover an ancient treasure thought to be worth billions.
Wishing to capitalize on his discovery, he asked for help from Brunel, a wealthy landowner in the region of Tanzania near the hidden mountain. That was a mistake which would expand to ensnare a friend of Modesty Blaise.
Her determination to stop Brunel and rescue her friend became an obsession when Willie is thrown from a plane at 3, feet without the use of a parachute.
All evidence points clearly to his being dead in a horrific car crash off a cliff. Unsatisfied with that answer, Modesty and Willie start their own investigation, one that will lead them from London to Macao to a chateau in the Pyrenees.
Their opponent is an American blackmailer expanding into Europe, aided by a band of bizarre killers including possibly the best martial artist in the world.
She re-instituted the policy of slaves and used them to work the fields. The twist to her story of evil was that she kidnapped the rich and famous and made them tend the crops in the land she dubbed Limbo.
When she tried for the billionaire John Dall and his lovely companion, Modesty Blaise, she almost succeeded.
Now involved, Modesty let herself be kidnapped. The question was then whether even Modesty Blaise could break out of Limbo. This is not a comic book but a regular size paperback.
It soon took deadly form when the strange criminal leader Beauregard Browne decided that Blaise was a hindrance to his art theft ring and should die.
The actual removal of Modesty and her companion, Willie, would fall to the insane Reverend Uriah Crisp, a would-be evangelical preacher with as an uncanny speed with his six-shooters as Willie had with his knives.
Tales of his deadly and merciless attacks on opponents had made him feared throughout the western Mediterranean area.
When a dying man begged Modesty and Willie to 'save the talisman', they soon found that fulfilling that request would take them to the desert of Morocco to fight the forces of El Mico.
It would also force Modesty to remember a part of her past long buried. Were they ultra liberals, arch conservatives, or free-spirited libertarians?
Their actions certainly did nothing to help in labeling the terrorist group for their acts of violence spanned the physical and political globe.
When Modesty accidentally blows the cover of an old friend, the life of the CIA agent was put in peril. As she tries to correct the mistake, she became a target of the very group her friend was infiltrating.
Now it would be The Watchmen against Modesty Blaise. As long as the issuer remains free to periodically make contact, the victim is untouched.
When the evil Doctor Thaddeus Pilgrim, leader of a bizarre 'religious sect' dedicated to answering that strangest of prayers, mistakenly feels that Modesty Blaise is after him, he knows he has to destroy her to survive.
This will prove difficult, even when Willie is brainwashed against her. It is a brilliant and beautiful cap to the life of this extraordinary pair.
Loosely adapated from the first book in the series. Gerald Tarrant is now an American running an intelligence service.
Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin, apparently also American, help out on occassion. The plot has a young female computer genius being kidnapped and needing rescue.
The very first radio presentation of Modesty Blaise. It was adapted by Morris Travis. During a kidnapping attempt of the loathsome Paxero, Modesty and her associate Willie Garvin learn of Danny's captivity and set out to rescue him and his fellow "slaves" in an adventure that spans London, Switzerland, New York and Guatemala.
Willie must free Modesty from a castle in Inverness when an old enemy from The Network days returns to seek revenge. Adapted from Peter O'Donnell's novel by Stef Penney, When Willie saw two goons attack two young women on the beach of a Caribbean island resulting in the death of one, he knew he had to step in.
Adapted from Peter O'Donnell's novel by Stef Penney, the terrific duo tries to stop a planned hijacking of millions of dollars worth of diamonds en route the Middle East.
But, after stopping on the cliff road to help two nuns who have broken down, Sir Gerald's car is found smashed to pieces at the bottom of the ravine.
Adapted from the first novel. Comic Strips. Bored with her retirement, she agrees to help, and so does Willie Garvin.
